Calvin Kavanagh had been pleasantly drifting off to sleep, completely satiated from the sex and having his lover wrapped around him.
“Cal…?” Lorne said hesitantly, breaking the silence of the dark room.
His tone made Calvin open an eye and peak at him, concern fighting with somnolence. “Yes?”
Lorne smiled at his obvious drowsiness and shook his head. “Never mind.”
That dragged Kavanagh back into full awareness. “Nick, what is it?” He asked more insistently as he opened both eyes to scrutinize his lover.
He flashed Kavanagh an embarrassed smile and was glad that the darkness would hide the sudden heat to his cheeks. “You know I love you right?” He replied, speaking quickly so the words all rolled into one.
They’d been together for about a year now. Almost as soon as he’d arrived in Atlantis he’d been drawn to the uptight scientist. But he’d never told him that before. The close call he'd had on the mission earlier had reminded him of that and it’d been preying on his mind ever since.
Kavanagh just looked at him strangely, one eyebrow raised. “You’re always so sentimental after sex.” He said with a slight hint of amusement in his voice. “Go to sleep. It’ll all be ok in the morning.”
Lorne watched him settle back into his arms. He idly stroked small circles around his bare abdomen whilst he became lost in thought. For obvious reasons they’d kept the relationship, if you could even call it that, quiet. But Dr. Zelenka had still found out. Nick had thought the lab was empty when he went in to surprise his lover. The real shock to him had not been that Nick was with a guy, but that it was Kavanagh. He’d tried to explain it, but the problem was he didn’t fully understand it himself.
There was something about the scientist, something deeper than the argumentative, bad-tempered man that everyone saw. He had principles and stuck to what he believed was right, no matter who it annoyed. Nick knew that he always had the best of intentions, even when his actions weren’t immediatedly transparent.
Then there was the part of him that was private. The part Nick was sure only he got to see. He had a gorgeous smile and a wicked sense of humour to match it. He was kind and thoughtful and despite how hard he worked, he was always ready to drop everything when he needed him. There’d been so many days in this senseless galaxy that Nick didn’t think he could have gotten through if he didn’t know Cal was waiting for him at the end of it.
Smiling to himself, he brushed his lips against the sleeping man’s temple, giving him a light kiss and then getting ready to follow him into slumber.
“Hey Nick,” said a quiet voice. “I love you too.”
